06/24/2012 - Mosele and Johnson combine on 2 hitter

Bloomington (McLean Co Pony Complex) -- The Twin City Toros returned to action Sunday afternoon against the Clinton Legion.  Pitching was the highlight in Game #1 of the doubleheader as starter Nick Mosele and reliever Noah Johnson allowed one hit each in the Toros 3-0 victory.

Mosele (1-1) struck out five in three innings of work and was awarded the win.  Johnson fanned six and walked none in 4 innings of work to earn his first save of the summer.  Johnson retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced.

The Clinton Legion tried to take the lead in the 2nd inning when they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter with one out.  Mosele then struck out the next two batters swinging to end the threat.

Clinton loaded the bases in the 3rd inning with one out.  Once again Toro starter Nick Mosele fanned the next two batters swinging and the game remained scoreless.

The Toros got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd.  Parker Schaab was plunked on a 2-0 pitch to start the inning.  After a fly out, Nick Mosele drew a 4 pitch walk.  A Toro fly out was followed by Kendall Warner reaching base on an error by the Clinton 3B to load the bases.  Another Clinton error on an Adam Hoerner grounder to second plated the unearned run for the Toros.

The Toros added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 4th.   Bryce Hendren reached base on a
dropped 3rd strike with one out.  Nathan Jones then singled to right center.  After a Toro strikeout, Noah Larson drew a two out walk to laod the bases.  Nick Mosele then laced a 2-0 pitch to left scoring Hendren and Jones to make the score 3-1.

Noah Johnson then shut the door to earn the save.   The Toros committed only one error and that was on the first play of the game.  Clinton helped the Toros cause making 5 errors.

The Toros improved their record to 7-6 on the season.

06/22/2012 - Pitching Training Methods and Injury Prevention

Pitchers are at an age where they need to get better (both in physical respects and in terms of their mental approach), but are at risk of developing arm injuries.  This post contains an overview of training methods and injury prevention techniques. Parts of this get lengthy, but hopefully at least parts of it are new information.

Working out:

Pitching is a very specialized position.  Unlike football players who try to gain raw strength, pitchers need to develop specific muscles while simultaneously protecting their arm from injury.  The best thing a pitcher can do is run both long and short distances.  Distance running will develop stamina and help a pitcher work deeper into ballgames.  Sprints build muscle and quickness, which translate into increased velocity.   Velocity comes primarily from the legs and core – not the arm.  Train accordingly.

I recommend avoiding lifts that place stress on the shoulder and elbow.  Basically, lay off bench press and heavy weights for upper body exercises.  Instead, opt for:
·         Fast paced circuit training or similar.  Ex. P90x, Insanity, Spartacus Workout (there’s a $2 smartphone app that tells you what exercises to do and how long to do them).  These workouts utilize lighter weights, but are fast paced and are good for improving cardio and building lean muscle.  By doing fast paced exercises, a pitcher becomes quicker and more explosive.  Pitching is an explosive motion, so explosive movements are more beneficial than doing 2-3 reps of your bench press max.   Throwing weighted medicine balls is another way to develop the muscles a pitcher wants to develop.
·         Supplement running with leg weights to train the legs as well as the arms.  Leg weights can be done with heavier weights because there is minimal risk of an arm injury.
·         Stretching – a lot of athletes do yoga, but any type of stretching based exercise routine will improve range of motion and core strength.  Improved flexibility translates to more velocity and reduced risk of injury.   I found that a challenging yoga routine, especially in a heated studio, is as challenging a workout as anything with weights.  You can find 25 minute yoga routines on YouTube or Comcast On Demand.
·         Long Toss – not surprisingly, you get better at throwing by throwing.  Long toss builds arm strength, including the smaller muscles/tendons that are crucial to pitching.  Long toss before games and on occasional off days.

Protecting your arm:

Running is actually considered to be better for healing an arm than icing after a game.  After every game, pitchers should go home and ice regardless of whether they pitched or not.  If there is soreness, a couple Advil can help reduce the inflammation.  On off days or game days where you will not be pitching, go for a 2 mile run to build cardio health, stamina, and will get the lactic acid (which causes soreness) out of your arm.

Many pitching injuries involve the rotator cuff.  The rotator cuff isn’t the type of muscle that you should train with dumbbells.  Instead, pick up resistance band tubing (http://www.amazon.com/SKLZ-APD-RKTBB-02-Bullet-Band/dp/B0053C3OR6/ref=sr_1_1?s=team-sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1340376067&sr=1-1) .  You can use the baseball specific type I linked to (I think Dick’s sells it too), but any type of resistance band will do the trick.  I did a 5 minute tubing routine 3-4 days per week in high school and never once had shoulder issues.  My uncle pitched at the Division 1 level and had shoulder surgery in high school.  He swears by these bands and says they’re the #1 reason he was able to come back.

Misc:

My personal experience with a professional pitching coach was outstanding, so I’m inclined to recommend it to you all.  Typically I would go for a 1 hour lesson in the winter so that my instructor could get my mechanics straightened out before varsity practices.  That way, I would look sharp at the early workouts while other guys were shaking rust off.  Some years I would go back once right before the season began, other years I wouldn’t. Just depended how I was throwing.  I was usually able to take note of what I learned from the instructor and apply it whenever I felt I was struggling with mechanics.  The instructor I used was Tom Gilles out of Pekin.  Kind of a long haul over there, but within 15 minutes of working with me, my mechanics would be in line, my fastball was harder, I could hit any spot, the changeup speed differential increased to 12mph from 8mph, and my breaking pitches were sharp.  Pretty remarkable.  I can’t find his contact info online, but I remember it was approx. $40 for a 1 hr. session.  If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll get the contact info from my Dad.

I’m noticing a lot of guys are struggling with control or are feeling uncomfortable on the mound.  The best way to improve is to throw regularly.  It’s good to throw a 20 pitch bullpen in between starts, or at minimum just play catch to stay sharp.  Because we often have games in quick succession, we haven’t had time for practices lately where we can throw bullpens.  That makes it that much more important to throw on your own outside of games.

Any pitcher who would like to throw a bullpen and work on mechanics, please let me know.  I am more than happy to work with you on mechanics either before a game, after a game, or find a mound and throw on an off day.  The jump from JV to Varsity is a big one, and it’s important to prepare yourself this summer for what’s ahead.

Hopefully this information is of some value.  Again, I apologize for my long-windedness.  Please let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to go into greater detail.

The second game was all Cyclones as the pitching depleted Toros dropped a 13-4 decision to split on the evening.

6/19/2012 - Warner's 3 Hit Complete Game Earn the Toros a Sweep.....

Bloomington (McLean County Pony Complex) -- Kendall Warner took the mound in the second game tonight with the desire to help his Toro teammates even their season record.  After visiting Metamora had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out in the top of the first you had to wonder if the Toros would be playing from behind once again.  Warner struck out the next two batters to end the inning.  The strikeouts started a run where Warner and the Toros defense retired 19 of 20 batters en route to a 2-1 victory.

Warner earned the win pitching 7 innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 10 to help the Toros even their season record at 5-5.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.  Catcher Wesley Anderson earned a one out walk.  Nick Mosele followed with a single advancing courtesy runner Duncan Welsh to 2B.  After a deep drive to center by McLean Conklin was hauled in by the Metamora center fielder, Noah Johnson drove in the eventual game winners with a hard single to center on an 0-2 pitch.  Welsh scored and so did Nick Mosele when the Metamora center fielder misplayed the ball to give the Toros a 2-0 lead.

Warner headed the hill one more time in the seventh.  After retiring the leadoff batter on a grounder to Evan Jefferson, Warner walked the next batter.  A single by Metamora put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Another groundout to Jefferson moved the runners into scoring position.  A passed ball scored a Metamora runner from 3rd to make the score 2-1.

The next two batters walked taking some pretty good pitches to load the bases.  On a 1-0 pitch, Warner got the Metamora lead-off batter to fly out to center to end the game and earn the sweep.

06/19/2012 - Toros Win First Game of Twin Bill over Redbirds

Bloomington (McLean Co. Pony Complex) -- The Twin City Toros came from behind twice to earn an 8-5 victory over the visiting Metamora Redbirds in the first game of a twin bill on a warm, windy and bug-less night in southeast Bloomington.  The swamp next to the electrical substation must be dry.

Both teams went scoreless in the first couple of frames as Toro Starter Noah Johnson recorded 4 of his 7 strikeouts the first time through the Metamora batting order.

The Redbirds struck first in the top of the 3rd scoring 4 runs on 4 hits. Their lead was short lived as the Toros evened the score up in the bottom of the 4th.  Nathan Jones started the rally with a lead-off walk (FYI: over 82% of all lead-off walks score).  Wesley Anderson hit a line drive single to right center and Nick Mosele reached on an infield error to load the bases.  Bryce Hendren followed with an RBI single to LC scoring Jones.  Anderson also scored on the play when the Redbirds LF made a fielding error to cut the score to 4-2.  Kendall Warner tied the game when his one out single to right scored Mosele and Hendren.

The Redbirds took the lead in the top of the 4th scoring an unearned run off Toro reliever Duncan Welsh.  But the Toros took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning.  McLean Conklin lead off the inning with a walk.  Parker Schaab turned a nice sacrifice bunt into an infield single and Conklin hustled his way to 3B on the play.  Nathan Jones walked to load the bases while the Metamora catcher threw the ball into LF trying to pickoff McLean Conklin who dashed home to tie the score at 5-5.  Wesley Anderson gave the Toros the lead with another hard single to right scoring Schaab.  The Toros got two insurance runs on an infield groundout by Duncan Welsh scoring Jones and later on a wild pitch scoring Anderson.

Duncan Welsh earned the win for the Toros pitching the last two innings allowing 1 hit, no earned runs while striking out 3.  Starter Noah Johnson struck out 7 in his three innings of work.

This was the Toros third win in a row, improving their record to 4-5.  After a 20 minute break to patronize the Pony Complex snack bar, we played game two.

06/18/2012 - Arvik, Conklin and 17 walks help Toros win 2nd straight....

Normal (Normal Community High School) -- The Twin City Toros didn't have special parking at Normal Community High School Monday night.  Lack of status was a good thing as the long walk from the parking lot warmed the bats as the Twin City Toros defeated the BNBA Blue 16U by a score of 18-10.

A 20-30 mph wind blowing in from left field played havoc with the pitchers as both teams combined for 27 walks in the 3:04 marathon.  354 pitches later the Toros earned their second victory in a row pounding out 14 hits mixed in with 17 walks issued by 5 BNBA 16U Blue pitchers.

The Toros never trailed and opened the scoring in the first as two out RBI single by Adam Hoerner scored Nick Mosele

Two runs were plated in the second inning as eventual pitching winner Sam Arvik scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on the first of his three hits on the evening.  Parker Schaab scored the Toros other run in the second on a rare timing play where the BNBA Blue 1B stepped on the bag after fielding an Evan Jefferson ground ball and then threw to 2B for the third out.  Schaab was hustling towards the plate and beat the tag on Nathan Jones sliding into 2B.

Toros starting pitcher Brian Zimmerman retired the first six batters he faced.  Zimmerman struck out the side in the first and then forced three ground balls, two unassisted putouts by Adam Hoerner at 1B in the second.

The top of the third saw the Toros blow the game wide open for 1/2 of an inning.  A seven run outburst all after one out was fueled by five BNBA Blue walks.  Brian Zimmerman doubled in Bryce HendrenNoah Johnson two RBI single scored Zimmerman and Adam HoernerSam Arvik and Evan Jefferson also had RBI singles in the frame as the Toros expanded the lead to 10-0.

The BNBA Blue scored eight runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  All six walks issued in the inning scored as the Blue only managed one hit to cut the score to 10-8.

Both teams wents quietly in the 4th before the Toros scored again in the 5th.  The Toros loaded the bases with two outs.  A two out RBI walk to Nick Mosele scored Sam Arvik.  Bryce Hendren followed with an RBI single of his own scoring Paker Schaab to make the score 12-8.  Kendall Warner then scalded a bases clearing double to left center on a 3-2 pitch to increase the Toro lead to 7 at 15-8.

The BNBA scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th but the Toros added two in the 6th and one on the 7th to make the final score 18-10.

The Toros pitchers allowed just 3 BNBA Blue hits.  Sam Arvik pitched 4 innings of 1 hit relief to earn the win for the Toros.  McLean Conklin pitched a scoreless 7th to help the Toros move their record to 3-5 on the season.

The Toros return to action Tuesday night vs. Metamora in a 5:30 DH at the McLean County Pony Complex.

06/16/2012 - Warner, Jones and Conklin lead Toros to first win

Bloomington (O'Neil Park) -- The Twin City Toros were the first to arrive at a locked O'Neil Park early Saturday morning. We were not the only sport going on as there was a swim meet at the pool and a skateboarding tourney in the parking lot, complete with a concession stand.  Little did our hosts realize that our bats were ready to sizzle in the early morning heat on the way to a 15-5 run rule over the Bloomington Barnstormers.

The Toros allowed the Barnstormers to score first as our opponents plated two runs against Toro Starter Nathan Jones in the bottom of the first.  After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Toros tied the game in the top of the third inning.  Two out walks to Kendall Warner and Noah Johnson set the stage for 1B Adam Hoerner to drill a double to right center scoring Warner and Johnson to make the score 2-2.

The Toros took the lead for good in the top of the 4th.  SS Nick Mosele led off with a single.  Brian Zimmerman then walked and Nathan Jones singled to center to load the bases.  CF Evan Jefferson grounded out scoring Mosele to put the Toros up 3-2.

A four pitch walk to 2B Bryce Hendren loaded the bases for clean-up hitter Kendall Warner who greeted a new Barnstormers pitcher with a bases clearing double to right center two make the score 6-2.  Warner later scored on a McLean Conklin single.

The Barnstormers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of 4 to cut the score to 7-4.  The Toros plated one run in the top of the fifth compliments of Kendall Warner's second double of the game scoring Evan Jefferson to make the score 8-4.
